Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check whether you are running Apache http server with mod_session enabled and specifically whether “SessionEnv” is turned on (not the default).
  2. If SessionEnv is enabled, follow the Apache vendor remediation guidance for Apache HTTP Server from the official security page.
  3. Upgrade Apache to the version(s) Apache recommends in their security advisory for CVE-2018-1283, or disable the affected SessionEnv behavior if an upgrade is not immediately possible.
  4. Re-test your CGI endpoints that use session-related environment variables to confirm they no longer reflect attacker-controlled “Session” header input.
  5. Record the change and keep an eye out for any follow-on Apache advisories for this same issue.

What it is

From the CVE record

In Apache httpd 2.4.0 to 2.4.29, when mod_session is configured to forward its session data to CGI applications (SessionEnv on, not the default), a remote user may influence their content by using a "Session" header. This comes from the "HTTP_SESSION" variable name used by mod_session to forward its data to CGIs, since the prefix "HTTP_" is also used by the Apache HTTP Server to pass HTTP header fields, per CGI specifications.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

If your Apache http server has mod_session sending session data to CGI scripts (SessionEnv enabled), a remote visitor may be able to affect what those CGI scripts see—so you should review this configuration and apply Apache’s recommended fix.

In Apache http server, when mod_session is configured with SessionEnv enabled to forward session data to CGI applications, an attacker can use a crafted HTTP “Session” header to influence CGI-visible session content via the HTTP_SESSION variable.

If you're affected

  • CGI app content manipulation
  • Session data tampering risk
  • Potential user data exposure
