In plain language

AI Worth attention

CVE-2017-11358 is a SoX (Sound eXchange) crash bug triggered by opening a specially crafted HCOM audio file; if your business processes untrusted audio files locally (as a person clicking/opening or an automated import), you should act to reduce crash risk.

Executive summary

CVE-2017-11358 is a Denial of Service caused by an invalid memory read in SoX’s hcom.c `read_samples` when it parses a crafted HCOM file, leading to an application crash; exploitation requires local access to run SoX on the malicious file and does not require authentication.

What to do now

  1. Check whether your system runs SoX (Sound eXchange) and whether your workflow opens or converts untrusted .hcom audio files (from customers, email, uploads, or third parties).
  2. If you do, stop processing untrusted HCOM files until you can patch.
  3. Update SoX using the vendor remediation guidance linked for the upstream change (and apply the corresponding Debian package update if you’re on Debian).
  4. After updating, test by attempting to run SoX on a known-bad/crafted HCOM sample in a controlled environment (or confirm your package version corresponds to the fixed upstream change).
