CVE-2026-65796
Windows iSCSI Target Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Description
Heap-based buffer overflow in Windows iSCSI Target Service allows an unauthorized attacker to execute code over a network.
In plain language
AI Act nowCVE-2026-65796 is a Windows remote code execution bug in the Windows iSCSI Target Service that can let an attacker run malware on the server over the network without needing a login; if your business uses iSCSI Target Service and it’s reachable from the network, you should act now.
CVE-2026-65796 is an unauthenticated, network-triggerable heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) in the Windows iSCSI Target Service that enables remote arbitrary code execution when the iSCSI Target Service is exposed.
What to do now
- Check whether the device runs the Windows iSCSI Target Service and whether it is exposed to the network (including directly or via port forwarding).
- In Windows Update (or your patch management system), update to the fixed versions for your edition: Windows 10 / Windows Server 2016/2019 to 10.0.14393.9418 or 10.0.17763.9115 (or the matching fixed build), and Windows Server 2022/2025 to 10.0.20348.5440/5499 or 10.0.26100.33222/33296.
- If you can’t patch immediately, restrict network access to the iSCSI Target Service so it is not reachable from untrusted networks (for example, block inbound access from the internet and limit to known management/storage networks).
- Review logs and alerts for unusual network activity or crashes related to the iSCSI Target Service around the time you expect the vulnerability to be addressed, and increase monitoring until fully patched.
