Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check your Linux kernel version (uname -r) and whether it includes the netfs fix commits for CVE-2026-64216.
  2. If your kernel does not include the fix, upgrade your Linux kernel to one that contains any of these commits: 6080fa3ecfbb4448a3b47368629534c09b6ec750, 3866d015f33aeedf81338dd99154703bef33faef, or dbe556972100fabb8e5a1b3d2163831ff07b1e8e.
  3. If you cannot upgrade immediately, reduce exposure by limiting use of network-mounted storage paths that rely on the kernel netfs code (treat this as temporary containment until you patch).
  4. After upgrading, retest the specific workflows that use network-mounted storage and monitor for kernel crashes and related storage errors.

What it is

From the CVE record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfs: Fix potential UAF in netfs_unlock_abandoned_read_pages() netfs_unlock_abandoned_read_pages(rreq) accesses the index of the folios it is wanting to unlock and compares that to rreq->no_unlock_folio so that it doesn't unlock a folio being read for netfs_perform_write() or netfs_write_begin(). However, given that netfs_unlock_abandoned_read_pages() is called _after_ NETFS_RREQ_IN_PROGRESS is cleared, the one folio that it's not allowed to dereference is the one specified by ->no_unlock_folio as ownership immediately reverts to the caller. Fix this by storing the folio pointer instead and using that rather than the index. Also fix netfs_unlock_read_folio() where the same applies.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

This is a Linux kernel bug that can be triggered through certain operations on network-mounted storage, potentially crashing the whole system or causing serious memory errors; most small businesses should treat it as important and plan an upgrade, especially if you use network filesystems.

CVE-2026-64216 is a Linux kernel netfs use-after-free in netfs_unlock_abandoned_read_pages() that can be triggered via network filesystem file operations (no authentication and no user interaction), leading to memory corruption or system instability.

If you're affected

  • System crashes or reboots
  • Kernel memory corruption
  • Service disruption for file access
  • Potential data handling instability
