Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check which PAN-OS version your PA-Series or VM-Series firewall (or Panorama) is running, and confirm the management interface is reachable only from trusted internal IPs.
  2. If you're on PAN-OS 12.2.0–12.2.3, upgrade to 12.2.4 or later.
  3. If you're on PAN-OS 12.1.8–12.1.10-h*, upgrade to 12.1.10-h2 or later (12.1.5–12.1.7-h* should go to 12.1.7-h8 or 12.1.10-h2).
  4. If you're on PAN-OS 11.2.x, upgrade to 11.2.16; on 11.1.x upgrade to 11.1.16-h3; on 10.2.x upgrade to 10.2.18-h12.
  5. If you can't patch immediately, restrict management-interface access to trusted internal IP addresses only and enable Threat Prevention signatures 510046 and 510047 as a stopgap.
  6. Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access deployments are not affected by this issue.

What it is

From the CVE record

A remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in the management interface of Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS® software enables an authenticated attacker with network access to execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the firewall. The security risk posed by this issue is minimized by restricting access to the management interface to only trusted internal IP addresses according to our recommended  best practice deployment guidelines https://live.paloaltonetworks.com/t5/community-blogs/tips-amp-tricks-how-to-secure-the-management-access-of-your-palo/ba-p/464431 . This issue is applicable to PAN-OS software on PA-Series and VM-Series firewalls and on Panorama (virtual and M-Series). Cloud NGFW and Prisma® Access are not impacted by this vulnerability.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

This is a serious flaw in Palo Alto Networks' PAN-OS firewall software that lets someone who's already logged into the management panel take total control of the device, and attackers are actively exploiting it right now — if you run PAN-OS firewalls, act immediately.

Authenticated RCE (CWE-94, arbitrary code/command execution) in the PAN-OS management interface allows a logged-in user to run arbitrary commands with root privileges, leading to full device compromise; actively exploited in the wild and listed in CISA KEV.

If you're affected

  • Full firewall/network takeover
  • Network-wide traffic interception
  • Operational disruption / outage risk
  • Ransomware or further network intrusion
  • Loss of security monitoring
