Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check your WordPress version in the WordPress admin dashboard (look under Updates, or About).
  2. If your WordPress is older than 4.9.9 (or 5.x older than 5.0.1), schedule an urgent upgrade to the fixed release.
  3. Confirm you do not have any accounts with “author” rights you don’t fully trust (review user roles and recent sign-ins).
  4. After upgrading, review web server and WordPress activity logs for any suspicious uploads or file changes around the time of the upgrade.

What it is

From the CVE record

WordPress before 4.9.9 and 5.x before 5.0.1 allows remote code execution because an _wp_attached_file Post Meta entry can be changed to an arbitrary string, such as one ending with a .jpg?file.php substring. An attacker with author privileges can execute arbitrary code by uploading a crafted image containing PHP code in the Exif metadata. Exploitation can leverage CVE-2019-8943.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

If you run an older WordPress site (before 4.9.9, or in the 5.x line before 5.0.1), a user with author access can upload a disguised “image” to force your server to run injected code—this is serious and should be fixed.

In WordPress (before 4.9.9 and 5.x before 5.0.1), remote code execution is possible when an attacker with author privileges uploads a crafted file and abuses the handling of the internal “_wp_attached_file” post meta so the server treats the uploaded content as executable, leading to full compromise.
