Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check your Nagios XI version and confirm whether it is earlier than 5.6.6.
  2. If you are on an affected version, plan an upgrade immediately to Nagios XI 5.6.6 or later.
  3. If you cannot upgrade right away, immediately restrict who can log into Nagios XI with plugin/admin capabilities, and review whether the nagios user account or Nagios XI admin features were accessed by unauthorized parties.
  4. After upgrading, monitor the server and Nagios XI for unexpected plugin/check file changes and suspicious command activity.

What it is

From the CVE record

Nagios XI before 5.6.6 allows remote command execution as root. The exploit requires access to the server as the nagios user, or access as the admin user via the web interface. The getprofile.sh script, invoked by downloading a system profile (profile.php?cmd=download), is executed as root via a passwordless sudo entry; the script executes check_plugin, which is owned by the nagios user. A user logged into Nagios XI with permissions to modify plugins, or the nagios user on the server, can modify the check_plugin executable and insert malicious commands to execute as root.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

CVE-2019-15949 is a Nagios XI flaw that can let an attacker run commands as the server’s root account if they have low-level access to the Nagios XI web admin area or access to the Nagios XI server as the nagios user. Small businesses using Nagios XI should treat this as urgent because real-world exploitation has been confirmed.

In Nagios XI before 5.6.6, improper validation of input passed to a root-executed script (getprofile.sh triggered via profile download) can allow attackers to execute arbitrary code as root by modifying a plugin/check executable; exploitation requires access as the nagios user or admin access via the Nagios XI web interface.
