CVE-2019-1068
Description
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft SQL Server when it incorrectly handles processing of internal functions, aka 'Microsoft SQL Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability'.
In plain language
AI Act nowCVE-2019-1068 is a serious SQL Server flaw where an attacker with low-level access can run code on your database server over the network—if your SQL Server is reachable and the attacker can get that access, you should act now.
CVE-2019-1068 is a remote code execution flaw in Microsoft SQL Server caused by incorrect handling of internal functions; it can be triggered by a remote attacker who already has low-privilege access to the target SQL Server, allowing arbitrary code execution on the server.
What to do now
- Check whether your organization uses Microsoft SQL Server (including SQL Server 2014 SP2/SP3 GDR, SQL Server 2016, or SQL Server 2017) and identify your exact installed version/build.
- If you’re on SQL Server 2016, upgrade to a build fixed in 13.0.4259.0 or later.
- If you’re on SQL Server 2017, upgrade to a build fixed in 14.0.2027.2 or later.
- Confirm SQL Server isn’t unnecessarily exposed to the internet (and restrict access so only trusted admin/app systems can reach it), and validate only required low-privilege accounts exist.
- After updating, monitor SQL Server logs and any detection alerts for unusual code execution attempts around the time of the change.

Exploitability
Required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
