Steps
Written by AI from the recordWhat it is
From the CVE record
The ParseCaffHeaderConfig function of the cli/caff.c file of WavPack 5.1.0 allows a remote attacker to cause a denial-of-service (global buffer over-read), or possibly trigger a buffer overflow or incorrect memory allocation, via a maliciously crafted CAF file.
In plain language
Written by AI from the recordCVE-2018-7254 is a bug in WavPack 5.1.0 that can crash (or potentially mis-handle memory) if someone tricks the WavPack command into reading a specially crafted CAF audio file; most small businesses only need to worry if you process untrusted CAF files from others.
In WavPack 5.1.0, the ParseCaffHeaderConfig function (cli/caff.c) mishandles a crafted CAF header, letting a remote attacker trigger a denial-of-service via a global buffer over-read and possibly reach memory corruption paths by providing a malicious CAF file for the user to handle.

How it is reached
- Attack Vector LocalRequires local access to the vulnerable system (e.g. local login, malicious file)
- Attack Complexity LowNo special conditions — the attack can be reliably reproduced
- Privileges Required NoneNo authentication required — anyone can exploit this
- User Interaction RequiredA user must click a link, open a file, or perform some action
Scope
- Scope UnchangedImpact is limited to the vulnerable component itself
Impact if exploited
- Confidentiality HighTotal information disclosure — all data in the component is compromised
- Integrity HighTotal loss of integrity — attacker can modify any data in the component
- Availability HighTotal denial of service — the component is completely unavailable
