In plain language

AI Worth attention

CVE-2018-1002200 is a directory-traversal flaw in plexus-archiver that lets a crafted archive write files outside the intended folder during extraction; if you extract untrusted archives and aren’t on plexus-archiver 3.6.0+, you should worry and update.

Executive summary

In plexus-archiver before 3.6.0, untrusted archive entries can include “../” path segments that are mishandled during extraction, enabling directory traversal (“Zip-Slip”) that writes to arbitrary files. This is not confirmed in CISA KEV, but there is public PoC availability and the likelihood trend is rising.

What to do now

  1. Check whether your system uses plexus-archiver (org.codehaus.plexus:plexus-archiver) and identify the installed version.
  2. If you have plexus-archiver before 3.6.0 in use, plan an upgrade to plexus-archiver 3.6.0.
  3. Rebuild/redeploy any apps that bundle the library so the updated plexus-archiver is actually used at runtime.
  4. If you must extract archives before upgrading, restrict where archives can be provided from (only trusted sources) and avoid extracting untrusted uploads until patched.
