Steps
Written by AI from the record- Check every machine for installed Adobe Acrobat/Reader versions and identify whether you are using: Acrobat Reader 2017.012.20098 or earlier, 2017.011.30066 or earlier, 2015.006.30355 or earlier, or 11.0.22 or earlier, including Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Acrobat DC.
- Compare what you have installed to the fixed guidance in Adobe’s security bulletin “APSB17-36”.
- Upgrade Adobe Acrobat/Reader to the patched version(s) referenced in APSB17-36 (and apply any additional Adobe updates released after that if your updater offers them).
- If you can’t update immediately, reduce exposure by restricting opening untrusted PDFs on affected devices (for example, via email security settings and user guidance) until the patch is applied.
What it is
From the CVE record
An issue was discovered in Adobe Acrobat and Reader: 2017.012.20098 and earlier versions, 2017.011.30066 and earlier versions, 2015.006.30355 and earlier versions, and 11.0.22 and earlier versions. The vulnerability is caused by a buffer access with an incorrect length value in the JPEG processing module. Crafted input with an unexpected JPEG file segment size causes a mismatch between allocated buffer size and the access allowed by the computation. If an attacker can adequately control the accessible memory then this vulnerability can be leveraged to achieve arbitrary code execution.
In plain language
Written by AI from the recordCVE-2017-16392 is a flaw in certain older Adobe Acrobat/Reader versions that can be triggered by a specially crafted JPEG inside a PDF; most small businesses should update Acrobat/Reader promptly to reduce the risk of someone running code on your computer.
CVE-2017-16392 is a memory-safety issue (CWE-119) in Adobe Acrobat and Reader’s JPEG processing; a crafted JPEG with unexpected segment sizing can lead to out-of-bounds buffer access and potentially arbitrary code execution when the attacker’s PDF content is opened.
