CVE-2017-1000375
Description
NetBSD maps the run-time link-editor ld.so directly below the stack region, even if ASLR is enabled, this allows attackers to more easily manipulate memory leading to arbitrary code execution. This affects NetBSD 7.1 and possibly earlier versions.
In plain language
AI Worth attentionThis NetBSD issue can make it easier for an attacker to take over a machine by abusing how memory is laid out; you should act if your NetBSD version is 7.1 (or older) and the system is reachable.
CVE-2017-1000375 is a memory-layout weakness in NetBSD where ld.so is mapped directly below the stack even with ASLR enabled, making it easier to manipulate memory and potentially reach arbitrary code execution; public exploit code exists.
What to do now
- Check whether your server is running NetBSD 7.1 or an older release.
- If it is, apply the vendor remediation based on the recommendations linked in the findings (Qualys “stack-clash.txt”): https://www.qualys.com/2017/06/19/stack-clash/stack-clash.txt
- Re-check after the change that the system configuration matches the remediation guidance (especially the memory/layout protections described in the linked recommendations).
- If you can’t apply the remediation right away, isolate the NetBSD host from untrusted networks and restrict access to only what’s required until the remediation is in place.
