CVE-2017-0541

This bug is in Android’s way of handling certain audio/voice-related media processing (sonivox). If someone gives your employee a specially made media file, opening it can lead Android to corrupt memory inside the system’s media service, which can be turned into running attacker code.

Think of it like a poorly designed “file reader” for music/audio files: a maliciously crafted file can cause the reader to break in a way that lets an attacker take over the process.

This matters if your business uses Android devices running the affected Android versions (including Android 4.4.4 through 7.1.1 as listed in the vulnerability description).

It’s only a risk when an attacker can get a malicious file onto a device and trick a user into opening/processing it with the vulnerable Mediaserver media handling. There’s no need for special device privileges—only user interaction with the crafted file.

1. Inventory and confirm exposure

   • List the Android device models used in your business.
   • For each device, record the Android version.
   • Treat devices as potentially exposed if they are on: Android 4.4.4, 5.0.2, 5.1.1, 6.0, 6.0.1, 7.0, or 7.1.1 (as stated in the vulnerability backstop).

2. Identify the correct fix in the update stream

4. Temporary workaround while patching (if you can’t update yet)

   • Block or discourage opening files from untrusted sources (email attachments, chat downloads, unknown websites, and file shares).
   • Where possible, use enterprise controls to restrict sideloading/downloading and limit installation from unknown sources.
   • Train staff: don’t open “surprise” audio/media files from unknown senders.

5. After remediation

   • Check for any unusual media-handling crashes, abnormal device behavior, or security alerts.
   • Ensure devices remain on a current security patch level going forward.

Notes on timelines

• KEV is not listed for this CVE, so act based on your exposure (device versions and user behavior) and your normal patch cadence, prioritizing devices with high exposure to untrusted messaging/file-sharing.
