Steps
Written by AI from the record- Check whether your Ubuntu system has Apport installed and note the Apport version.
- If Apport is older than 2.20.4, plan to upgrade it to Apport 2.20.4 or newer.
- Review whether untrusted users or automation can place files in the crash report locations that Apport reads (i.e., whether someone else has local access).
- After upgrading, confirm the Apport version changed and that crash report handling still works as expected.
What it is
From the CVE record
An issue was discovered in Apport before 2.20.4. There is a path traversal issue in the Apport crash file "Package" and "SourcePackage" fields. These fields are used to build a path to the package specific hook files in the /usr/share/apport/package-hooks/ directory. An attacker can exploit this path traversal to execute arbitrary Python files from the local system.
In plain language
Written by AI from the recordCVE-2016-9950 is a bug in Apport (Ubuntu’s crash-report tool) that can be tricked into running malicious code if an attacker can place a specially crafted crash file on the machine; typical small businesses should patch because it’s reachable by a local attacker.
CVE-2016-9950 is a path traversal issue in Apport’s crash report “Package” and “SourcePackage” fields that can lead to execution of arbitrary Python code via the package hook lookup mechanism; affected systems are those with Apport before 2.20.4 and where a crafted crash file can be placed in the target location.

How it is reached
- Attack Vector LocalRequires local access to the vulnerable system (e.g. local login, malicious file)
- Attack Complexity LowNo special conditions — the attack can be reliably reproduced
- Privileges Required NoneNo authentication required — anyone can exploit this
- User Interaction RequiredA user must click a link, open a file, or perform some action
Scope
- Scope UnchangedImpact is limited to the vulnerable component itself
Impact if exploited
- Confidentiality HighTotal information disclosure — all data in the component is compromised
- Integrity HighTotal loss of integrity — attacker can modify any data in the component
- Availability HighTotal denial of service — the component is completely unavailable
