CVE-2015-1701
Description
Win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2, Vista SP2, and Server 2008 SP2 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, as exploited in the wild in April 2015, aka "Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
In plain language
AI Act nowIf you run older Microsoft Windows (including Windows Server 2003 SP2, Vista SP2, and Server 2008 SP2, plus several later Windows versions), a local user can run a crafted program to gain higher privileges—this has been used in real attacks, so you should act.
CVE-2015-1701 is a local privilege-escalation flaw in the Windows win32k kernel component (Win32k.sys) where a low-privilege local account can trigger a crafted application to gain higher privileges; it is listed in CISA KEV as having been used in ransomware campaigns, making it a confirmed real-world risk.
What to do now
- Check whether the affected Microsoft Windows versions are installed on any business systems (including servers/desktops), especially older/legacy machines.
- Verify whether the Microsoft security update in MS15-051 has been applied for CVE-2015-1701 on those systems.
- Upgrade or patch systems that are missing the fix, following Microsoft’s MS15-051 instructions.
- If any system cannot be patched, isolate it from the internet and internal networks and plan replacement with a supported Windows version.
