Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check your NGINX configuration for the "aio" directive and for Server Side Includes (SSI) pages using "include virtual" commands — if neither is present, you are not affected.
  2. If you use NGINX Plus, upgrade to version 37.1.0.1 or 37.0.5.1 (or later).
  3. If you use open-source NGINX, upgrade to version 1.31.7 or 1.30.6 (or later).
  4. If you cannot patch immediately, turn off the "aio" directive or stop serving SSI pages as a temporary measure.
  5. Confirm with your hosting provider or IT team that the server has been restarted after patching.

What it is

From the CVE record

NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source have a vulnerability in the ngx_http_core_module module. When asynchronous file I/O (AIO) is enabled in certain configurations, processing a Server Side Includes (SSI) page containing “include virtual” commands may trigger a Use-After-Free (UAF) in the NGINX worker process. This may cause memory corruption or a worker process crash. Additionally, attackers can execute code on systems with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) disabled or when the attacker can bypass ASLR. Impact: This vulnerability may allow remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) on the NGINX system, corrupt its memory, or possibly trigger code execution. There is no control plane exposure; this is a data plane issue only. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

If you run NGINX or NGINX Plus with a specific advanced setup (async file reading plus certain dynamic web pages), a remote attacker could crash your server or possibly take it over — most standard setups are not affected, but if you have this configuration you should patch now.

Use-after-free (CWE-416) in nginx's ngx_http_core_module, triggerable via unauthenticated network requests to SSI pages containing "include virtual" when AIO is enabled, leading to worker-process crash, memory corruption, or potential RCE if ASLR is bypassed.

If you're affected

  • Website/service outage
  • Server memory corruption
  • Potential full server takeover
  • Operational disruption
