Steps
Written by AI from the record- Check whether your NGINX or NGINX Plus deployment uses HTTP/3 (ngx_http_v3_module) with proxy_request_buffering turned on.
- If you can't patch immediately, disable buffered proxying by setting
proxy_request_buffering off;in your configuration as a temporary workaround. - Upgrade NGINX Open Source to version 1.31.7 or 1.30.6, or NGINX Plus to 37.2.0.1 or 37.0.7.1, whichever matches your current branch.
- After upgrading, verify HTTP/3 proxied traffic behaves correctly and remove the temporary workaround if no longer needed.
What it is
From the CVE record
Description NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source have a vulnerability in the ngx_http_v3_module module. When using HTTP/3 with proxy_request_buffering on directive, an unauthenticated attacker may be able to inject data in the proxied request. Impact This vulnerability may allow remote attackers to inject data in the proxied request. There is no control plane exposure; this is a data plane issue only. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
In plain language
Written by AI from the recordA flaw in NGINX's HTTP/3 support could let an outside attacker tamper with data being sent to your backend servers, but only if you've turned on HTTP/3 proxying with request buffering; fixed versions are available and you should update now.
CWE-172-class encoding/parsing issue in nginx's ngx_http_v3_module allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to inject data into a proxied request when HTTP/3 is used with proxy_request_buffering on, affecting the data plane only (no control-plane exposure).
If you're affected
- Backend request tampering
- Potential data integrity issues
- Operational disruption if exploited
- Reputational risk from HTTP/3 outages
