Steps
Written by AI from the record- Check whether you run a Cisco Secure Email Gateway appliance and whether Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) with file reputation scanning is turned on.
- If AMP file reputation is enabled, assume the device may already be compromised and isolate it from the internet immediately.
- Apply Cisco's September 2026 software release and the Content Scanner Tools update, which contain the fix — contact Cisco support for the exact build for your version if unsure.
- Ask Cisco (via your support channel) whether they have flagged your device as showing signs of compromise, since Cisco has been proactively contacting affected customers.
- After updating, have your IT provider check system logs and file integrity for signs of unauthorized file changes or new admin accounts.

What it is
From the CVE record
A vulnerability in the Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) feature of Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to write arbitrary files on the underlying operating system. This vulnerability is due to improper handling of email attachments when the file reputation service is enabled. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending an email that contains a crafted attachment through an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to write arbitrary files and execute commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.
In plain language
Written by AI from the recordAttackers are actively breaking into Cisco Secure Email Gateway devices right now by emailing a booby-trapped attachment that lets them take full control as the system's top-level administrator — if you run this device with malware scanning enabled, treat this as an emergency.
Unauthenticated remote attackers can achieve root-level arbitrary file write and code execution on Cisco Secure Email Gateway by sending a crafted email attachment that abuses path handling in the Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) file reputation service (CWE-23 path traversal), and this is already under active exploitation per CISA KEV and vendor confirmation.
