Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check whether you run Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager and confirm its exact software version.
  2. Determine if the management interface is reachable from the internet — this is the most urgent risk factor.
  3. Upgrade to version 20.9.10.1 or later, which fixes this issue.
  4. If you cannot upgrade immediately, apply the workaround steps in Cisco's security advisory to restrict access to the vulnerable API endpoint.
  5. Review recent admin activity and API logs for signs of unauthorized access, since exploitation is already occurring.

What it is

From the CVE record

A vulnerability in the API session-based authentication management of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to access an affected system with privileges of the admin user. This vulnerability is due to improper handling of URI encoding in an HTTP request, which allows the request to bypass an authentication rule that is intended to restrict access to a specific API endpoint. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to the API of the affected system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to bypass authentication and gain access to the API as the admin user.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

A critical flaw in Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager lets attackers break in over the internet without any password and take full administrator control, and attackers are already doing this now — if you run this product, act immediately.

An unauthenticated attacker can bypass API authentication in Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager by crafting an HTTP request with non-standard URI encoding that slips past a URL-matching authentication rule, gaining full admin-level API access; this is being actively exploited in the wild.

If you're affected
