Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check which Session Smart Router version you're running and whether the device has already been onboarded to Mist or Conductor.
  2. If not yet onboarded, treat the device as exposed and prioritize patching before connecting it to any network.
  3. Upgrade to 7.0.5, 7.1.7, or 7.2.3 (or any later release) depending on your current branch.
  4. Once upgraded, complete onboarding to Mist/Conductor as normal, since this closes off the exposure permanently.
  5. There is no temporary workaround, so patching is the only mitigation if the device is still pre-onboarding.

What it is

From the CVE record

A Missing authentication for critical function vulnerability in Juniper Networks Session Smart Router allows an unauthenticated network-based attacker to obtain administrative privileges by passing crafted URL parameters to an insecure endpoint running as root. Note that this vulnerability can only be exploited prior to the device being onboarded to Mist/Conductor. The issue can no longer be exploited once a device is onboarded to Mist/Conductor.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

A flaw in Juniper's Session Smart Router lets an attacker take full administrative control without logging in, but only before the device has been set up/onboarded into Mist or Conductor management — once onboarded, the router is safe from this issue.

CWE-306 (missing authentication for critical function) in Session Smart Router allows an unauthenticated network attacker to reach an internal root-privileged endpoint via crafted URL parameters and gain full administrative control, but only on devices not yet onboarded to Mist/Conductor.
