Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check what version of XWiki Platform you are running (visible in the admin panel or installed package info).
  2. If running any version from 2.4-milestone-1 up to 4.10.19, 15.5.3, or 15.10-rc-1, treat this as urgent.
  3. Upgrade to XWiki 14.10.20, 15.5.4, or 15.10-rc-1 (whichever matches your release line) as soon as possible.
  4. If you cannot upgrade right away, delete or restrict access to the 'Main.DatabaseSearch' page as a temporary measure, unless your users rely on it for searching.
  5. After upgrading, confirm the DatabaseSearch page works normally and review access logs for unusual search queries around the time before you patched.
mvn dependency:... (not a typical package manager install; upgrade via XWiki distribution/WAR or set org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-search-ui to >=14.10.20 / >=15.5.4 / >=15.10-rc-1 in your Maven build)

What it is

From the CVE record

XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform. Starting in version 2.4-milestone-1 and prior to versions 4.10.20, 15.5.4, and 15.10-rc-1, XWiki's database search allows remote code execution through the search text. This allows remote code execution for any visitor of a public wiki or user of a closed wiki as the database search is by default accessible for all users. This impacts the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation. This vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 14.10.20, 15.5.4 and 15.10RC1. As a workaround, one may manually apply the patch to the page `Main.DatabaseSearch`. Alternatively, unless database search is explicitly used by users, this page can be deleted as this is not the default search interface of XWiki.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

If you run a public or internal XWiki wiki site (versions before 14.10.20 / 15.5.4 / 15.10-rc-1), anyone visiting it—no login needed—can take full control of your server, so you should check and fix this soon.

Unauthenticated remote code execution in XWiki Platform via the Main.DatabaseSearch page, where unsanitized search text is interpreted as server-side script (CWE-95/94), granting full confidentiality/integrity/availability compromise to any visitor.

If you're affected

  • Full server takeover
  • Data theft from wiki content
  • Website defacement
  • Platform used to attack other systems
  • Extended downtime during cleanup
