Description
mIRC before 7.55 allows remote command execution by using argument injection through custom URI protocol handlers. The attacker can specify an irc:// URI that loads an arbitrary .ini file from a UNC share pathname. Exploitation depends on browser-specific URI handling (Chrome is not exploitable).
In plain language
AI Worth attentionmIRC versions before 7.55 can be tricked into running commands from a remote location if a specially crafted “irc://” link is handled by the wrong type of browser or app—most small businesses only need to worry if employees use mIRC and may click untrusted links.
Unauthenticated remote command execution in mIRC “irc://” custom URI handling via argument injection that can load an attacker-chosen .ini file from a UNC path; exploitation depends on the browser/app’s specific URI handling behavior (Chrome is not exploitable) and has publicly available proof-of-concept code.
What to do now
- Check each device where mIRC is installed and note the exact version.
- If any device runs mIRC earlier than 7.55, plan an upgrade immediately.
- Upgrade mIRC to version 7.55 (or later) on all affected devices.
- Review recent “irc://” links clicked by staff and block or remove untrusted link sources until updates are complete.
- After updating, watch for unusual mIRC starts/behavior when users click links from the internet.
