CVE Tools

Description

Multiple Buffer Overflow vulnerabilities in the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) subsystem of Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XE Software, and Cisco IOS XR Software could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition or execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges on an affected device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCuo17183, CSCvd73487.

AI Act now

This is a serious Cisco network device flaw where an attacker on the local network can crash the device or potentially run malicious code without needing a login—most small businesses should treat it as urgent if their Cisco gear is exposed on the same network.

Executive summary

CVE-2018-0167 involves multiple buffer overflow weaknesses in the LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) subsystem of Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XE Software, and Cisco IOS XR Software; an unauthenticated adjacent attacker can trigger it over the local network to achieve a crash or potentially elevated code execution.

What to do now

  1. Check whether your Cisco IOS / IOS XE / IOS XR devices run the affected versions and have LLDP enabled on any interfaces.
  2. Identify which Cisco platforms you use (IOS, IOS XE, IOS XR) and confirm current firmware versions from the device configuration.
  3. Upgrade IOS XR to fixed release 5.1.3 (or apply Cisco’s corresponding IOS/IOS XE fixed updates per the vendor advisory).
  4. If you cannot patch immediately, disable LLDP on the interfaces that face the local network where untrusted devices may be present, then reassess exposure.
  5. After changes, verify the device is running the intended fixed version and monitor for instability on affected interfaces.
